About Us

What is Elm Street United Methodist
Church?
We are a community of faith seeking to follow Christ, and to worship God: Father, Son
and Holy Spirit, while reaching out to South Portland and the World with God's Love in
Christ through word and deed. We serve our community in a variety of ways, through
our Missionary Luncheons at noon on the first Wednesday of each month, by collecting for
the food bank, through prayer and study, through our greater United Methodist connection,
and our members are involved in a variety of other ways as well.
Is that it, you ask?
Of course not! There's our famous bean suppers, on the fourth Saturday of every month.
We seat at 4:30 and 5:30 PM, and we'd love to see you there!
And yes, we do meet for worship!
We gather together and hope you will join us to worship the Lord every Sunday at 11:00
AM. Our services are also broadcast on South Portland Community Television on most Saturdays and Sundays at
9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
So what does it mean to be United Methodist, you ask?
That is a great question - Elm Street United Methodist Church is a Christian
fellowship, and as United Methodist Christians we are called together to serve Christ in
our communities. With all Christians, we believe in the Triune God: Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit, and that through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God and
human beings can be reconciled and brought into loving relationship.
What's different about United Methodists?
The United Methodist Church comes from the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren
traditions, both of which have long histories in North America. On our Methodist
side, we trace our heritage to John and Charles Wesley, brothers and Anglican priests in
the 1700's who were significant in a major revival in England that gave birth to
Methodism. Our EUB heritage comes from German preachers in America influenced by
Methodism and German Pietism. You can find out more about the history of The United
Methodist Church here, and about what we believe here.
We are a congregation of the New
England Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Oh, and you should know...
God loves you, and so do we here at Elm Street UMC! As our communion liturgy assures
us, "Christ died for us while we were yet sinners, that proves God's love toward
us!" We would love to get to know you, to tell you what Jesus has done in our
lives, and how the Holy Spirit is at work in our church! Come visit us, give us a
call at 207-799-0407, or fire off an e-mail to office@elmstreetumc.org.
